For a long time the Korean scientific community avoided engaging with the creationists, fearing that it could boost the credibility of the group. But silence is no any longer an option.
The STR has been fighting to eliminate the content on evolution from textbooks, including the discovery that the feathered Archaeopteryx was an ancestor bird. This is just one aspect of how the development paradigm has evolved.
What is Evolution?
The theory of evolution is a branch of science that explains changes in genetic traits over time. The theory is based on the fact that living organisms adapt to their surroundings which can result in changes in genes or even whole genomes. These changes could over generations lead to the creation of new species. The most popular theory of evolution is natural selection, which explains the process through which individuals with advantageous characteristics survive and reproduce more often than those with disadvantages. This variation in reproduction could eventually lead to the emergence and evolution of new species.
The term "evolution" comes from the Latin word for unrolling or revealing. However, the concept has had a variety of meanings since it took form in the fields of science and elsewhere. Early evolutionists, such as Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather) believed that existing species evolved into new species in a certain way. The term transmutation was coined by Lamarck's student embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, to describe this view. Charles Lyell, who published the second volume of his Principles of Geology in 1833 challenged this notion and borrowed the term "evolution" from Geoffroy's student to describe the idea that species are evolving into different species in a gradual and predictable way.
Recently, evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process when living creatures develop characteristics that improve their chances of survival or ability to reproduce offspring. In time, genetic variation can cause a population acquire new physical characteristics or biological functions. Natural selection is the process that drives the majority of evolutionary changes. However non-genetic changes like the increase in muscle mass due to exercise or diet cannot be considered to be examples of evolution since they are not inherited by future generations.
Creationists have a tendency to use the argument that evolution is controversial despite the fact that it has been proven to be true by thousands of scientific tests and that it has stood the test of time. They claim that the theory should not be taught in schools. In South Korea, creationists won a few victories over evolution in high school textbooks. This includes the removal of references about the evolutionary history of humans and Archaeopteryx which is a feathered dinosaur believed to be the ancestral bird's first ancestor.

The evidence for evolution is overwhelming. No other scientific theory explains more about the universe and life on this planet. It has been thoroughly studied and verified for many years. Many people, including religious leaders, support the scientific theory of evolution. It is essential to remember that evolutionary biology isn't in interfere with religious beliefs since it only focuses on physical objects, events and processes.
Many religious people have discovered a way to reconcile evolution with their beliefs. For example, some Christians believe that God created the universe through evolution and that humans have an ancestral connection with other animals.
It is crucial that science educators advocate for teaching evolution. In some countries, anti-evolution sentiment has been rising. In the United States, efforts to restrict the teaching of evolution have made some headway in a few states. In South Korea, a group known as the Society for Textbook Revise (STR), an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research is urging the removal of textbook content on the evolution of horses as well as the bird ancestor Archaeopteryx.
While these are troubling changes, it's important to keep in mind that the evidence for evolution is overwhelming. The evidence for evolution comes from a variety of sources, including fossils, genetics, and the behavior of living creatures. The evidence is also independently verified by other scientists.

What is Creationism?
Creationists are those who believe that God created the universe and everything within it. They also believe that the Bible is the word of God and should be taken literally. Many creationists are Christians However, not all. Creationists typically fall into one of two categories: Young Earth creationists (YEC) and old earth creationists (OEC).
The most popular type of creationist is known as the YEC. They believe that God created the universe in exactly the way that is described in the Bible. They believe that the biblical account of the first six days of creation was true and that the universe and life on Earth were created only recently.
OECs may be less popular However, their beliefs are just as passionate like the YECs. OECs believe that the universe and all life on Earth are billions of years old, and that evolution is an untruth.
Both forms of creationism deny that scientific principles such as natural selection and abiogenesis are able to explain the origins of life on Earth. The pioneers of modern scientific thought resisted miracles because they feared they could lose their credibility.
Some creationists accept naturalistic evolution and special creation. Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the entire universe in one event known as the Great Flood. In general, creationists oppose the teaching of evolution in schools. This position is supported by numerous professional organizations which include the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education as well as the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. However, certain academic institutions and scientists are more flexible, and allow the inclusion of creationism and evolution in their curriculum.
What is Creationism?
When people think of the concept of creationism most often, they think of the United States. However, South Korea is also home to an anti-evolutionist movement. The publishers of high-school textbooks announced recently that they would remove the mention of evolution in their books. The Society for Textbook Revise, an independent organization that is an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACCR), has led this campaign. STR has secured its first victory by removing instances of the evolution of the horse as well as an avian ancestor called the Archeopteryx from textbooks. Its next target is to eliminate excerpts from Darwin’s infamous finch-research as well as on human evolution.
STR claims to have the support of around 4000 families and individuals. Its aim is to root out what it believes is the "atheist materialism" that creates a bleak worldview for students. It also aims at countering the influence of American Creationists in the nation. A survey of undergraduates studying biology found that half did not believe in evolution. The reasons for this are not clear however, they could be related to religious beliefs or the absence of full-time creation scientists across the country.
The KACR has achieved many things through its lectures and seminar events. It publishes a bimonthly journal called Creation and a book. One of them is a textbook on the natural sciences that has an evolutionary perspective that has sparked interest among college students. In 1991, a professor together with a minister began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught today.
On August 6 and 7, 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. This was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six foreign lecturers including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin addressed a crowd of more than a thousand. KACR and its members have been delivering lectures on creation science at major seminaries too. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center in the future.
